During recent site assessments we’ve learned where some people are getting misinformation on solar….our competitors or at least some of them. There are now over 200 firms selling solar electric systems in Massachusetts, most are less than three years old. Here are some of the deceptions in play in this market:

  1. “Better hurry ; sign up with us now.. the states rebate program is running out of money”

There is no reason for any Massachusetts consumer to feel pressured into a purchase for solar. The MASSCEC programs are continuously funded.

2.   “All solar modules are the same “    Well they might look similar but solar modules are not a commodity;  there are distinct quality differences. There is a glut of very cheap, poorly made Chinese modules on the market, some of which are failing  after less than two years in the field. These are what the low bidders are typically using.

3.  “ The utility will cut you a check for the extra electricity production your solar system makes that you can’t use”   This lie is used to justify selling you a system larger than your needs. Massachusetts utilities credit your electric account for over production; they do not send you a check.

There are even wilder claims being made – in our next brief we’ll discuss the ways solar salespeople push consumers to sign for a twenty year solar lease deal.
